The IRS uses a variety of federal tax forms, but the most common one for individual filers is Form 1040, which is the U.S. Individual Income Tax Return. You use this form to report your income and deductions for the previous tax year and calculate the amount of tax you owe or the refund you will receive.
There are other forms used for different purposes. For instance, you might use a Form W-4 to tell your employer how much federal income tax to withhold from your paycheck or a Form 1040-ES to pay estimated taxes if you have income that isn’t subject to withholding.
